About Sevastopol

Sevastopol was founded in 1783 as a southern sea fortress by order of the Russian Empress Ekaterina the Great. The name of the city is translated from Greek as “glorious”, “worthy of worship”. Twice in its history Sevastopol confirmed its imposing a high responsibility name. During the Eastern (Crimean) war of 1853-1856 the heroic defense of Sevastopol that lasted for 11 months has brought world fame and glory to the city. In 1941-1942 Sevastopol fought for 250 days against the outnumbering enemy’s forces. After the great victory Sevastopol was awarded with an honorary title of the city-hero for courage and heroism of its defenders and citizens.

            Today Sevastopol is a large industrial, scientific and cultural center of the South of Ukraine.  In the city there are quite a lot of big industrial enterprises, the seaport, and a few Research Institutes. Also Sevastopol is the primary base of the Naval Forces of Ukraine and the main base of the Russian Black Sea Fleet. The city is often referred to as an “open-air museum” due to a large number of monuments in it. The most ancient of them is Chersoneses, a Greek colony which was founded in the 5th century BC and existed until the 15th century AD. The unique museums Panorama and Diorama are dedicated to the two heroic defenses of the city. Historical Boulevard with numerous attractions, Primorskiy Boulevard with Aquarium-museum, Dolphinarium and a number of restaurants and cafes situated right at the seafront - all of them are the most favorite places of rest for tourists and citizens. Besides there are a lot of unique nature monuments in Sevastopol region – cape Fiolent, cape Aiya, bays Laspi and Batiliman – it is simply impossible to enumerate all of them here. Indeed, it is better to visit once then hear about it a hundred times!
